Since the 1920's when Chanel self-proclaimed "tanning a fashion accessory" a golden brown tan has been considered a sign of good health. That I just got back from a "getaway" to sun-drenched island in the idea. Like clean air and the great outdoors, it has been assumed that the sun, being part of nature, could only be good for you. Unquestionably, the sun does have some beneficial effects. Vitamin D which is important for bone development and growth, in fact sunlight is capable of stimulating Vitamin D production in your skin. . In fact we don't even need the sun for Vitamin D, most of us get enough from the food we eat.
What types of ways can you get a tan that are out there including using the sun?
Types are:
Laying out at the Beach
Spray Tans
Tanning Booths
Tanning Beds
Sum Lamps
Self-tanners > creams, lotions, towels to name a few.
Unfortunately most of the types of tanning done today do not come with a warning label. There is an overwhelming amount of medical and scientific evidence that points to the sun as Public Enemy #1 of your skin.
The Surgeon General has determined that sun tanning may lead to the development of premature aging, sagging, wrinkling and discolorations of your skin along with the development of skin cancers.
Tell that to any "Sun Worshiper" and despite all the warning they won't be convinced or refuse to even care. Often they have I know its bad but I either can't or won't give it up attitude.
While your suntan fades after summer the damage done to your skin is still irreversible
What if you are the type that just won't give up that sun kissed tan glow? Look into self tanners. They have had major improvements over the years since they were first introduce in the 60's. Who doesn't remember that fake orange glow?
Many self tanners have an ingredient called "dihydroxyacetone" or DHA which is an color-inducing chemical. It makes you look tan by reaction with proteins in your skin. The color it creates usually last about two to five days depending on the brand. Try not to shave or exfoliate your skin while using a self tanner, it makes it disappear more quickly.
Next time you see someone with a "healthy-looking" golden tan you are really looking at someone who has not only permanently damaged their skin but are at greater risk for development of skin cancers. Pre-mature wrinkles and aging happen with sun damage, why look older than you really are?
Be smart – think before you sunbath, pale is the new healthy look.
